Hi AIMMSians,

The last update on academic license delivery came with great features. However, I started to have some problems with the Internet connectivity condition.

My runs usually take few hours, sometimes even a day. During these long runs, sometimes my internet connection drops for a minute, cause I have a weak wifi. If this happens when the solves is finished, I can see the error window and click on reconnect. But, when it is solving, then AIMMS just halts at the middle of the solve and exits without asking. This issue was dragging my work and my colleagues for the past two weeks.

I understand that you would like to tighten your academic license policy, but I suggest to keep the internet connection requirement to a longer frequency (e.g. weekly).

Please let me know if there is an other idea or workaround to resolve this issue.

Hi @afattahi

We don't have any intention to tighten our academic license policy. Rather the old scheme was quite labor-intensive, both because an individual license had to be created after manually approval, and the IP range restrictions required a lot of support.

With the new licensing scheme, we merely give you access to an existing network license in the cloud in a completely automated fashion, hence the internet connection requirement.

What I gather from your mail is that your complaint is not so much about requiring internet access per se, but rather that AIMMS should be more resilient with respect to intermittent connection loss, especially in cases where you loose a lot of work when this happens.

Is that a correct summary?

Hi  @MarcelRoelofs

Yes, your summary is correct. Currently, AIMMS requires a constant stable internet connection to run. It happened several times that, during heavy runs, AIMMS just closes unexpectedly due to connection loss. Therefore, leaving the MyProject.aimmslockfile file in the model foler.

Also, this need for a stable internet connection makes it difficult to edit the code when I have a poor connection (for example, in the house or in the train).

Hi @MarcelRoelofs ,

Are there any updates on resolving this issue?

We've just committed a set of changes that will allow an AIMMS session to run for 24 hours whenever a connection to the license server is lost, and will automatically pick up a new network license once a connection with the license server can be made again. These changes will be available with the next bugfix release.

I'm experiencing the same problems. I'm looking forward to the next bugfix release. Thank you :)

Yeah, it's a necessary adaption to a situation that we didn't have before, namely a license server connection via the internet via a websocket connection, instead of just a direct TCP connection on a LAN (which is much more stable). Please let me know if the changes we made work for you or not.

@afattahi, @Manuelsd

AIMMS 4.79.6.12 with the above improvementshas been released this morning, you can download it from the AIMMS launcher (or manually if you so prefer).

Thank you Marcel, I will download it and test it during the coming days. I will let you know if the changes worked after testing it.
